George Russell set the pace in the second practice session at Suzuka ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton.
The conditions were an improvement on FP1 as the drivers were able to venture out on the Intermediate tyres, although it also meant that the planned dry tyre test for the 2023 compounds was scrapped by Pirelli.
Max Verstappen set the third quickest time with Kevin Magnussen putting in a late effort to go fifth quickest.
Charles Leclerc was only 11th fastest owing to brake issues throughout the session, while both McLaren's were at the bottom end of the timesheet with Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo 16th and 17th quickest respectively.
