Oliver Bearman suffered a high-speed crash during the Japanese Grand Prix which left him limping heavily after exiting the car.
F1 drivers issued multiple warnings in the early rounds that the new cars this year could generate a large-scale crash.
Bearman was caught out by the significant speed difference between himself and Franco Colapinto as they used different energy deployment settings.
The Haas driver was travelling 50 km/h faster than his rival and felt he was not given adequate room on the inside before skating across the grass and into the barrier at high speed.
F1 drivers have since highlighted the seriousness of the incident and the danger the new power units are creating in wheel-to-wheel action.
With a major break now in play due to the cancellation of Middle Eastern races, F1 has time to figure out if it needs to make adjustments to avoid a similar incident in the future.
