Colton Herta suffered a huge accident in FIA F2 practice at Monza, in the worst possible preparation ahead of his latest F1 outing for Cadillac.
Herta is due to take over Sergio Perez's MAC-26 in F1 Free Practice 1 later in the morning at Monza for his third FP1 outing of the season.
However, with around 15 minutes remaining in the sole F2 practice session, the American dipped his left-side wheels into the gravel rounding the second Lesmo corner.
The Hitech driver then span across the track and into the barrier on the other side of the circuit, with the rear of the car being destroyed as it lay stricken in the middle of the circuit.
Herta climbed out uninjured from the car and was transported back to the paddock for a debrief with his engineers and to prepare to take over Perez's car in F1 practice.
