Bottas jokes about Mercedes start: We're sandbagging as always

After over two days of testing, Valtteri Bottas isn't sure what to make of Mercedes start to the 2021 season, though things have improved since Friday.

Mercedes have had an uneven start to the season, and while Valtteri Bottas jokes about the team's issues thus far, he admits things haven't exactly been smooth for the outfit thus far. Friday was a day to forget for the team as Bottas saw his session hampered by a gearbox problem, while Lewis Hamilton found himself off the track with regularity. "As always, we are sandbagging again this winter," Bottas joked when speaking to Sky Sports about the German team's uneven start to the season. Despite the problems, Bottas sees reason for optimism as things have improved over the last two days. "Just like yesterday, this morning (Sunday) was a lot better than day one," he told RacingNews365.com and other members of the media. "We were able to complete our entire program this morning and we concentrated on the long runs. We compared setups and looked at a lot of data, we are taking steps forward all the time. "I think we have made some progress. There is more to find and more to gain. I am still not 100 percent satisfied with the car, as you would never be at this stage of the season. It's unknown where we are at the moment."
