Aston Martin concede to Australian GP 'mess' after major error

Aston Martin chief trackside officer Mike Krack has admitted to a communication "mess" surrounding Fernando Alonso's pit stop at the Australian Grand Prix.

The Spaniard was called into the pits on lap 11 of the race as the Silverstone-based squad's challenging start to the year continued.

It was anticipated that Alonso's car had been retired due to the significant vibration issues that plagued its build-up to the 2026 season.

However, the AMR26 was then released back onto the track several minutes later, 11 laps down on the rest of the field.

Krack acknowledged the situation was a "mess" for the team as he explained a mix-up in communications resulted in the confusion.

"The pit stop on lap 11 was a mess," Krack told media including RacingNews365.

"It was not a mess from the garage side, it was a mess from our side on the pit wall.

"The communications were not basically cross communicated. You have so many channels, and then sometimes things go wrong.

"One of the things we have to acknowledge is that we have not done much of it, and this was the first time live, really, and it didn't go well.

"That is something that we need to go around and work on in the future."

Alonso eventually retired from the race, as did team-mate Lance Stroll, as Aston Martin and Honda continue to explore fixes for their unreliable entry.

The team is navigating a challenging scenario as it has no spare batteries for its power unit.

Krack stated Aston Martin prioritised preserving its parts when reaching the decision to pull their cars from the season-opening grand prix.

"At the end of the day, it is common knowledge that we are not rich in any parts," he said.

"There wasn't much to gain from where we were, and we took the decision together to preserve the parts."
