Kimi Antonelli faces a final "test" ahead of his full-time Mercedes F1 debut next season, to get his driving license!

The young Italian driver does not yet possess a general Italian driving license but has booked his practical exam for the end of the year.

Since Max Verstappen entered F1 without a driving license, it has been mandatory for drivers to have one to compete in the pinnacle of motorsport.

However, exceptions can be made, which takes some pressure off the 18-year-old who will replace Lewis Hamilton at the Silver Arrows next season.

"I don't have a driver's license yet!" Antonelli told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I do have a car at home, but it has quite a bit of damage. It feels a bit strange to start in F1 without a driver's license, but I just hope to pass my practical exam in December."

Monza emotions

Antonelli made his F1 debut earlier this season in first practice at the Italian Grand Prix, where he replaced George Russell.

The Italian was "emotional" on his first lap in front of his home supporters, before a costly mistake saw his session end after 10 minutes.

He crashed on the exit of Parabolica which resulted in significant damage to Russell's car, which Antonelli revealed did not please his future team-mate.

"That first lap was really emotional, especially with all the Italian fans in the stands," said Antonelli.

"But then I started to misbehave a bit, although luckily I get two more chances in Mexico and Abu Dhabi.

"George Russell was anything but happy with my crash, but I get along well with him and he gives me good advice. But next year I want to beat him!"
