Alonso open to switching teams as he looks to 'next few years' in F1

Fernando Alonso's current contract with Alpine expires at the end of 2022, and the Spaniard is showing no signs of wanting to walk away from Formula 1 as he continues in his quest for a third title.

Fernando Alonso admits that he is open to the possibility of switching teams in F1 in order to drive one of the quickest cars on the grid. Following a two-year hiatus from the sport in 2019 and 2020, Alonso made his comeback with Alpine last year, and at 40 years old is the oldest driver currently racing in Formula 1. The two-time World Champion's contract with the French squad expires at the end of 2022, but he is not showing any signs of wanting to walk away from F1 just yet.

Alonso still on the hunt for third title

It has been 16 years since Alonso took his last championship victory in 2006, yet the desire for a third title has not dulled. When asked by Sky Sports ' Ted Kravitz if he still feels he can fight for another World Championship if given a competitive car, he explained: "I think so, that is why I keep racing. "There is still always the hope that one year you will have the package and all the things together to fight for a championship, and I still feel competitive and fast."

Could Alonso move to another F1 team?

In his extensive F1 career, Alonso has raced for a number of teams, including Ferrari and McLaren. The Spaniard was quizzed on whether he would be willing to move to another outfit on the grid – even if it meant being a 'second driver' to the likes of Max Verstappen or Charles Leclerc – in order to drive a quick car, and this is something that he would not rule out. "I think that, at the end of the day, there are not many number one or two drivers in any team right now and the teams, they need both drivers to work together and to improve the car," Alonso said. "Especially with the new regulations, you are still learning with every lap you do and you have to work towards a better car, a better package, so let's see what the possibilities are in the next few years."
