George Russell fires clear F1 title warning

George Russell has expressed confidence that he can “beat anybody” as he pursues a maiden Formula 1 world championship.

The Briton has been locked in a title battle with team-mate Kimi Antonelli during the opening rounds of the season, with Mercedes emerging as the benchmark team from the outset of the campaign.

It marks the first genuine championship fight of Russell’s F1 career, having joined Mercedes in 2022 just as the team slipped down the competitive order.

During those more difficult years, however, Russell consistently matched - and often beat - Lewis Hamilton before the seven-time F1 champion’s departure to Ferrari.

As he looks to close the points deficit to Antonelli, Russell insisted he is not focused on the gap and remains confident in his own ability.

“I’ve got to be honest, I’m just looking at myself as my main competitor,” Russell told the media, including RacingNews365.

“And that’s what I’ve done over the last seven years in my whole F1 career. I know that if I tick all of my boxes, I know I can beat anybody. 

“That was the case last year when I was team-mates with Kimi, and that was the case the year before when I was team-mates with Lewis.”

Russell added that his primary focus is getting the best out of himself and his collaboration with his engineers as he hunts for a maiden championship.

“I’m not looking at my edge over anybody else,” he said. 

“I’m looking at how do I get the most out of myself, with my engineers, out of the car set-up, out of the tyres. 

“I know if I tick all of those boxes, I can win. That is my goal.”
