Fernando Alonso believes 2026 is likely his "only chance" to finally become a three-time F1 world champion, when the new power unit regulations are introduced.
2026 will mark 20 years since Alonso secured his second consecutive F1 drivers' title for Renault in 2006, with an elusive third continuing to be his "dream".
At Aston Martin, he does not expect next season to be a campaign where a championship can be won, with him outlining that he already foresees a challenging 2025.
Becoming a three-time champion is his ultimate target, with the Spaniard knowing that surprises often happen in the pinnacle of motorsport.
"I still dream," Alonso told the BBC. "Why not? I know 2026 is probably my only chance because 2025 is extremely difficult, but I am still dreaming.
"F1 is for dreamers, probably, because anything can happen. Let's see."
It is the new power unit regulations which Alonso and Aston Martin are targeting for success, with an entirely new car to be built.
The Silverstone-based team will also become a Honda works team, whilst the car itself will also be made by Adrian Newey.
Newey's arrival is significant for Aston Martin, given his track-record of designing championship-winning cars.
Alonso is excited for Newey's arrival, but recognises that 2026 could be his final season in F1.
"Expectations will be high because it is a new car, change of regulations, car made by Adrian," Alonso said.
"Probably - or at least to start - it will be my last season in F1. Because my contract finishes at the end of 2026. It is the time of delivering and the time of truth. High expectations."
