George Russell's trouble-free promenade to victory along the shores of the Caspian Sea was interrupted by two mid-race safety cars, but the Mercedes driver was ultimately able to fend off Max Verstappen to take the chequered flag by just under two tenths of a second in Baku.
The Briton's win at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was his third of the season, and saw him take a chunk of points out of team-mate Kimi Antonelli's still-healthy lead in the F1 drivers' championship standings.
With the 20-year-old recovering to fifth from P16 on the grid, Russell's deficit shrunk to 66 points, from 81 at the start of the weekend.
It could have been more, but for the Alex Albon and Franco Colapinto-induced interludes, which closed up the pack and removed both Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris from Antonelli's list of rivals to pass, with Oscar Piastri's mistake further aiding his cause.
Alpine and McLaren were the big losers in the constructors' title fight, with the former missing the opportunity to close to just four points behind Racing Bulls in the battle for fifth.
And despite Ferrari's relatively modest haul, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finishing in fourth and sixth, respectively, McLaren going scoreless only strengthens the Scuderia's hold on second in the standings.
