2026 F1 Austrian Grand Prix weather update: Drivers facing extreme conditions

Round eight of the 2026 Formula 1 season gets underway at the Red Bull Ring this afternoon, with George Russell leading the field away from pole position as Spielberg prepares for a scorching race day.

A temperature of 35°C is forecast for the Austrian Grand Prix, with the region placed under an orange temperature warning as a sustained heatwave grips the Styrian hills. 

Humidity sits at a relatively comfortable 39%, while a light south-south-easterly breeze of just 9 km/h will offer little relief for the thousands of fans packed into the natural amphitheatre surrounding the circuit.

Thunderstorms have been flagged in wider regional forecasts, but the chance of any disruption to the race itself remains very low. 

Current models place the convective risk well outside the race window, meaning a dry 71 laps are expected on a track surface that will be fiercely hot under the afternoon sun.

For fans in attendance, conditions demand caution. The UV index is high, and strong sun protection is essential, along with regular hydration throughout the afternoon. 

Temperatures of this magnitude, combined with the exposed grandstands at the Red Bull Ring, can quickly become dangerous without proper preparation.

On track, the extreme heat will pose its own tactical challenge.

 Tyre degradation and cooling will be critical concerns for every team, adding another variable to what promises to be a fascinating contest as Russell looks to convert pole into victory.
