Who is Rafael Camara? The F1 rookie set for baptism of fire

Rafael Camara is getting his first run out at Haas earlier than expected as he jumps into the car this weekend for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

Rafael Camara will make his F1 race debut this weekend at his home grand prix in Sao Paulo, with Haas confirming the Brazilian will replace Esteban Ocon for the remainder of the Interlagos weekend alongside Oliver Bearman.

The move comes sooner than planned, as Camara had already signed a multi-year deal with Haas to join the team full-time from 2027.

But Ocon's permanent removal from the seat, following internal disputes during the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend, has fast-tracked his arrival by more than a year.

Last weekend, it was Ryo Hirakawa who deputised for Ocon - however, the Japanese driver is unavailable for Brazil due to a scheduling clash with the World Endurance Championship finale at Monza.

But just who is Camara, and how has the 21-year-old found himself in position to race in F1?

Camara facing major debut obstacle

Camara arrives on the F1 grid with a formidable junior record. He won the 2024 Formula Regional European Championship with Prema before claiming the FIA Formula 3 title in his rookie season with Trident in 2025, sealing that championship with a round to spare on the back of four feature-race wins and a category-record five poles.

This year, racing for Invicta in Formula 2, he has taken three victories and seven podiums from 25 starts, amassing 207 points to lead the championship standings.

But none of that experience will make Sunday straightforward. A home debut at Interlagos carries weight few circuits on the calendar can match, and no doubt his entry will capture the attention of the local fans who will have a second Brazilian to cheer for.

To further complicate the situation, the conditions are set to be far from ideal.

Friday practice is expected to be overcast with highs near 24°C, but Saturday brings a sharp jump to around 29°C alongside a 60 to 70 per cent chance of thunderstorms disrupting qualifying. Sunday swings the other way entirely, with temperatures dropping to roughly 17°C and a 40 to 50 per cent rain risk lingering into the race start.

Throughout the years, there have been some major shunts at Interlagos - including last year for Gabriel Bortoleto - and any such moment for Camara would be a big stain on what is set to be the biggest weekend of his career to date.

Whether Camara retains the seat beyond this weekend remains unclear, with his ongoing F2 commitments raising questions over whether he or Hirakawa will take the Haas for the season's final rounds in Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
