Lando Norris topped the first free practice session at the Spanish Grand Prix, setting a lap time of 1:13.718, over three-tenths of a second clear of Max Verstappen in second.
Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton completed the top three at the Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya, with Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri rounding out the top five.
FP1 was the first hour of running where the new flexi-wing regulations were being enforced, but the picture over what impact, if any, that FIA technical directive might have will become clearer as the weekend progresses.
Victor Martins, on his first official outing in an F1 car went P19 for Williams. The Frenchman replaced Alex Albon for the opening session of the day.
Meanwhile, Ryo Hirakawa took over Esteban Ocon's Haas, finishing P17. The Japanese driver, who had a wide moment during FP1 in Spain, also replaced Ollie Bearman in Bahrain. That opportunity came after deputising for Jack Doohan at Suzuka before promptly leaving Alpine to rejoin Haas.
