George Russell went fastest in the second free practice session at the Canadian Grand Prix, narrowly beating Lando Norris by 28 milliseconds.

Kimi Antonelli was third quickest at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, just under three-tenths of a second off his team-mate's lap time of 1:12.123.

That is just over a tenth slower than the British driver's pole position time at the same track 12 months ago. Alex Albon and Fernando Alonso rounded out the top five in Montreal.

In fact, Mercedes power units accounted for the top seven places on the timing board at what is a power sensitive circuit.

Charles Leclerc was unable to compete in the second hour of running after his FP1 crash necessitated a chassis change for his Ferrari.

He was joined on the sidelines fewer than 10 minutes into the final session of the day by Lance Stroll, the eighth and final Mercedes power unit runner.

The home driver glanced the wall on the outside of Turn 7, but considerable damage was inflicted on his Aston Martin, which he eventually parked at the hairpin (Turn 10) in front of the stand in his name.

The conundrum between the soft and medium Pirelli tyres continued to provide intrigue, with the red-walled C6 compound not a clear qualifying favourite for the teams. Russell set his best lap time on the latter, but Norris set his on the former.
