Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has conceded the prospective performance at this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix is not forecast to be as strong as in Spain. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell underlined the step forward gained by an extensive upgrade package with a two-three finish at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya - the latter charging through the top 10 from 12th on the grid. But upon F1's return to the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Wolff has warned a repeat performance is unlikely. "With its long straights and low-speed corners, it's not a track that we expect to suit our car as well as Barcelona did," said Wolff. "No matter where the true pace of the car is this weekend, we will aim to maximise our result. The characteristics of the circuit will also provide further opportunity to learn about the W14 and feed into our development path."
Schumacher a 'valuable member' of Mercedes
Mick Schumacher made a debut outing for the Silver Arrows as part of the Pirelli tyre test that followed the Spanish Grand Prix. The German joined the team as reserve driver over the winter after being dropped from a Haas race seat, but has been hailed for his work behind the scenes by Hamilton. "Following the Grand Prix in Spain, Mick got his first opportunity to drive the W14," explained Wolff. "He settled in well during the Pirelli tyre test and enjoyed the experience. "Mick has become a valuable member of the team already and his work in the simulator has proved useful in finding lap time, as we saw in Barcelona."
