Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff thinks the focus for every team needs to turn to 2022 in order to not be at a disadvantage when Formula 1's new technical regulations are introduced. Many teams have debated when to stop bringing upgrades to their current cars, so they can give their full attention to the new F1 rules which could shake-up the pecking order. Mercedes have found themselves in a difficult position due to their ongoing title fight with Red Bull in the first half of the season. “You need to look also in 2022,” Wolff told Motorsport.com. “Because unless you're having some magic wand, you will be at a deficit next year. “So I believe that most of the teams have stopped development for 2021. But if they continue to push for 2021, that certainly is going to give them an advantage [this year].” Mercedes lead the Constructors' Championship by 12 points over Red Bull whilst Lewis Hamilton heads Max Verstappen by eight points in the Drivers' Standings. Despite leading both championships, Wolff believes Mercedes are the hunters. "I think we are the hunter, we approach this with fun," said Wolff. "There is nothing to lose for us because we have a deficit towards our competitors. "So we have just to win and continue the journey with great anticipation, enjoy every single race. We can try to do the best possible job and hopefully that's enough to really compete for the championship until the very end of the season."
