Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has ruled out Formula 1 adopting Balance of Performance [BoP] in an attempt to stop Red Bull's dominance. Max Verstappen's victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix was his seventh in a row and his ninth win from 11 races this season as Red Bull broke McLaren's long-time record for number of consecutive wins with 12. The two-time champion's winning margin of 33.731secs over runner-up Lando Norris was the biggest of the season with polesitter Lewis Hamilton finishing fourth - 39.134s down Verstappen. Such is the dominance of the Red Bull RB19, Wolff described the race as "a bunch of F2 cars against an F1 [car]," but does not want to see any artificial intervention.
Wolff rules out BoP
BoP is a mechanism whereby the performance of each car in a series can be adjusted to ensure parity and that one does not begin to dominate. It is also known as success ballast and is mainly used in sportscar racing, such as in the World Endurance Championship. "Why I love this sport is that is meritocratic and entertainment follows sport, not the other way around," he told media including RacingNews365. "We can't create Balance of Performance or anything that would level out the field, it is what it is. "We've had this for years with Mercedes where we've finished one and two in every single race - that was certainly not great for entertainment purposes. "That's why we just need to work better and get ourselves back into contention, because like many fans, we will get frustrated [from qualifying] when think we are really close [to Red Bull], keep watching and see what happens [in the race] and see one car disappearing into the sunset."
