Toto Wolff believes Mercedes must provide Lewis Hamilton and George Russell with a 'more reliable' car if they want to beat Red Bull on merit. Mercedes introduced a significant update to its car at the Monaco Grand Prix earlier this season, electing to remove its 'zero sidepods' in favour of a more conventional design that mimics the characteristics of the Red Bull RB19. The early verdict from the team is that it was a step in the right direction after it secured a double podium at Spain and further podiums at Canada and Silverstone.
The development race among the top teams behind Red Bull is tight with McLaren, Ferrari and Aston Martin all pushing each other along with Mercedes. Wolff believes Mercedes needs to focus on one key area: "I think the main areas of improvement is just to give the drivers a more reliable car,” he said. "It's not about the absolute amount of downforce, but it's just for them to know that the car is going to be stable when they turn into the corner, which isn't the case at the moment. The Mercedes team boss has been impressed with the patience of both Hamilton and Russell, having only won one race since the 2021 season. "Both drivers did a really good job in coping with the ups and downs and the drivability of the car, always looking forward to how we can increase the performance of the overall chassis,” he added.
