Wolff explains Russell's recent 'knife edge' struggles

The Briton has not finished on the podium since the Spanish Grand Prix following a disappointing run of races.

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has explained George Russell's recent struggles with the Briton having secured just one podium this season. Russell is currently 49 points behind Hamilton in the Drivers' championship with the seven-time World Champion outscoring his teammate in each of the last three races. Mercedes changed design direction with the W14 at the Monaco Grand Prix after it was clear its earlier concept continued to present the team with the problems that plagued its fortunes last term. Russell conceded prior to the summer break that he was not on top of their car's characteristics as much as Hamilton, highlighting their setup direction as 'validating' concerns from recent races .

Confidence affecting Russell

Speaking to media including RacingNews365 about Russell's struggles, Wolff said: "These cars are on the knife's edge. "You can quickly fall off it and lose confidence. On the other side, if you're within that corridor of sweet spot... having said that, the car has no sweet spot! "But being more in that zone of understanding what it will do next, I think there's a big difference. You can quickly be in either one of these situations and obviously it goes against you or for you."
