Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has insisted the pit lane near-miss between Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso at the Canadian Grand Prix was "a bit of drama" from the Aston Martin driver. Hamilton had leapt Alonso from third on the grid to take position behind race-leader Max Verstappen's Red Bull in the opening exchanges. The seven-time World Champion held firm until the first round of pit stops, triggered early by George Russell's crash in the sister W14. With Mercedes positioned further down the pit lane, Aston Martin completed Alonso's service first. Hamilton was released into his former teammate's path, with the Spaniard taking evasive action. Two-time champion Alonso instantly took to his team radio to point out that he was forced to apply the brakes to avoid a collision, with the FIA triggering an investigation into the incident. But no further action was deemed necessary, despite the close proximity between the drivers in the fast lane.
He is good at that
Hamilton would ultimately be unable to hold Alonso at bay on the race track with the Aston Martin far superior around the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, with the final finishing margin only reduced to within five seconds due to the AMR23 being forced to manage brake temperatures. Addressing the pit lane incident, Wolff told media, including RacingNews365.com : "[It was] a bit of drama. "Shaking the steering a little bit and a little bit of touching of the brakes. He is good at that, the cries of 'I nearly hit him'... a bit of drama."
