Williams bring new technical director into the fold

Williams have poached FX Demaison away from Volkswagen Motorsport, where he was responsible for the design of the revolutionary electric ID.R.

Williams have signed Francois-Xavier Demaison as their new Technical Director, with the Frenchman set to start work at Grove next month. Known as 'FX', Demaison will be put in charge of the technical department at Williams to lead development of the 2022 car under the new regulations. He will oversee the car design, and aerodynamic departments. Demaison will report directly to Jost Capito, the team's new CEO who, himself, is a new signing as Williams go through a rebuilding process under new owners Dorilton Capital. “I am really looking forward to joining Williams Racing next month, as they begin an exciting journey to turn their performance around," said Demaison. "It’s going to be a great challenge, but one that I am eager to start. They have a great team of talented people, and I hope I can work with them and the senior management team to help carve out a direction for the future, to help the team achieve its ambitions.” “We are delighted to welcome FX to the team. I have seen his technical capabilities first-hand, and his sporting successes speak for themselves," said Capito of his new signing. "Bringing in someone of his calibre to our already experienced technical team will help drive the future direction of our operation and strengthen our team. "I have no doubt that his knowledge will contribute to us taking another important step towards our ambitions of winning again. At Williams we have an exciting challenge ahead of us, and I look forward to seeing FX contribute as we continue on this journey.”

Who is 'FX' Demaison?

Demaison joins Williams from Volkswagen Motorsport, where he has worked since 2011. He oversaw the development of the revolutionary VW ID.R which set a new Pikes Peak record in 2018 with Romain Dumas at the wheel. The ID.R also holds the record for the fastest ever lap of the Nurburgring Nordschleife for an electric car. It's second on the overall list, only beaten by the Porsche 919 EVO Hybrid. Demaison comes from a rallying background, responsible for the VW Polo R WRC car that won everything in its path between 2013 and 2016. He has also put in stints as a Chief Engineer with Subaru and Peugeot's rally teams in the past, before joining Volkswagen.
