Williams sign F3 winner to driver programme

The team has signed 19 year-old Formula 3 driver, Franco Colapinto, to their driver academy.

Williams have signed 19 year-old and Formula 3 race winner, Franco Colapinto, to their driver academy. The Argentine driver joins the Williams Racing Driver Academy following an impressive rookie season in F3 with Van Amersfoort. He claimed a maiden victory in the championship at the Imola round, along with podiums at Austria, Hungary and the Netherlands. This was followed by a win in the sprint race at Monza. “It’s a real honour to join Williams Racing as an Academy Driver,” he said. “They are one of the most successful teams in Formula 1 history and I am looking forward to following in the footsteps of my fellow countryman Carlos Reutemann. "It’s an incredible opportunity for which I am forever grateful. Thanks to everyone at Williams for putting their trust in me.“

Goal to win F3 title in 2023

Colapinto will compete in F3 again during the 2023 season, however he will be switching to MP Motorsport - who won last year's F2 title. It's also a team that Colapinto has raced with in the Eurocup and Formula Regional European Championship. He added: "The goal is to reach even higher this time. My first year in FIA F3 was all about learning and I will use all the knowledge I’ve gathered to aim for the title."
