Williams release statement after 'legend' Alan Jones saddening death

A heartfelt statement has been released by Williams.

Williams has paid tribute to Alan Jones following the death of its first world champion, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 80.

Jones died three days after celebrating his 80th birthday, following a brief illness. His wife, Amanda, confirmed his death in a statement released through Motorsport Australia on behalf of the family.

The Australian won the 1980 Formula 1 world championship with Williams, the team's first drivers' title and the first of back-to-back titles for the Grove-based squad, which Jones delivered in just its fourth season competing in the sport.

Across a career spanning 117 race starts, Jones took 12 wins, 24 podiums and 206 points.

Williams released a statement reflecting on the impact Jones had on the team's early success, which read: "Everyone at Williams is deeply saddened to learn of Alan Jones' passing.

"Alan was instrumental in making Williams what it is today, forming an extraordinary bond with Frank Williams and Patrick Head to become our first drivers' world champion in just our fourth season in Formula 1. He set the standard for Williams champions: a fast, uncompromising racer with a challenger mentality who loved motor racing and dedicated his life to it.

"He is a true Australian icon and a Williams legend, and he will be dearly missed. We send our love and thoughts to the Jones family and all his friends."

After leaving Formula 1, Jones built an extensive career in sports car and touring car racing, winning the 1978 Can-Am Challenge Cup and finishing sixth overall at the 1984 24 Hours of Le Mans. He later became a fixture of Australian motorsport broadcasting and served the FIA as a driver steward at Grands Prix from 2010 onwards.
