Williams hoping upgrades 'set the scene' for F1 resurgence

The Grove-based outfit returned to the top 10 at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Williams Head of Vehicle Performance Dave Robson is hopeful the team's major upgrade package introduced at the Canadian Grand Prix will "set the scene" for improvements on next year's car. The Grove-based outfit has impressed so far this season, particularly through Alex Albon, and has rejoined F1's midfield battle. A lack of development early in the season left the team towards the back of the pack but Albon was in receipt of new parts for the weekend at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The package proved fruitful, with the Thai-British driver excelling in qualifying and the race to collect a seventh-place finish and promote Williams from the foot of the Constructors' standings and to within a point of eighth-placed Haas. Asked if the changes were made with an eye to next year's challenger and a further push through the pecking order, Robson told media, including RacingNews365.com : "There are a few things in here that are sort of philosophical in terms of what we are trying to get the aero to do. "So that will sort of set the scene for next year's car, hopefully."

Further upgrades to come?

Albon's rookie teammate Logan Sargeant will have to wait until the British Grand Prix to have the upgrade package added to his car. The amount of development teams can do in F1 is now controlled by the budget cap and, asked whether Williams could bring another major package this season, Robson replied: "We can do. "Most of what we have upgraded, all the big items we have upgraded, we would have had to have brought new versions of what we had anyway, just to keep the stock up. "So in that regard, it is not massive. Yeah, there's the design effort and a few new moulds, but otherwise, it's not huge in terms of cost cap."
