While Formula 1 is often all about extracting lap time on track, the race to bring new parts to make cars faster is also just as intense for the engineers.

In some cases teams must make use of rapid prototyping processes to get parts on to their car quickly, which is where 3D Printing comes in.

F1 teams can produce thousands of 3D printed parts over the course of a season, with McLaren admitting that it utilises the technology for 9,000 parts per year.

Mercedes have produced a video showing bodywork panels being 3D printed as part of their rapid prototyping, with Programmer and Technician Robin Seddon showing how the technology can make a difference.
