The Formula 1 hybrid era began in 2014. Since day one Mercedes have been the benchmark when it comes to engines. Their strong start under the new rules has carried over year to year, with the team winning seven world titles in a row.
The man behind the success is, or was, Andy Cowell. Cowell started with Mercedes in 2004 before becoming the head of the engine department for the Formula 1 team in 2013. He was the architect behind the most efficient Formula 1 engine ever created, the Mercedes M08 EQ Power+.
