Max Verstappen has stated Red Bull only encountered “good surprises” during the opening day of pre-season testing from Bahrain.
Verstappen ended the session in third place, behind pace-setter Lando Norris and the Mercedes of George Russell.
The Dutchman had a handful of off-track moments as he got up to speed with the RB21, taking over driving duties in the afternoon from team-mate Liam Lawson.
Red Bull endured a difficult 2024 season despite Verstappen's championship success, as the team slipped back in the pecking order midway through the season.
However, Verstappen has highlighted that nothing felt amiss during his first experience with the new car.
“From the driving I did today everything felt good,” Verstappen said.
“Only good surprises which was good. We don’t know the pace yet but everything is working well and the car is doing what I want it to do.
“It is all in control and that is what we can hope for really to start off testing.
“We are constantly learning and trying different things and will continue to do so.”
Verstappen will not drive during testing on Thursday, with Lawson having a full day of running before the four-time champion returns on Friday.
The 27-year-old detailed he is not aiming to set impressive pace at the Bahrain test, but rather discover what strengths the car has.
“It is not about hitting the perfect lap,” Verstappen said.
“It is about working on our testing programme and learning what direction we need to push the car forwards to get it under control.”
