Verstappen insists he's happy for Perez as title fight takes fresh twist

Max Verstappen has praised his Red Bull team for their race-winning strategy that helped teammate Sergio Perez to his first Monaco Grand Prix victory.

Max Verstappen says he is happy to have extended his World Championship lead over Charles Leclerc as his teammate took victory in Monaco. Sergio Perez fought through two red flags and a Safety Car to claim a first-ever win at the famous racing circuit, jumping both Ferrari cars in the process. Verstappen, meanwhile, was able to turn fourth on the grid into a podium finish on another bad day for home hero Leclerc, with the Dutchman's lead in the title race growing by three points. "I did the best I could, of course, after yesterday. We did a really good job with the strategy to basically get ahead of the Ferraris. I think as a whole team, we can be very pleased with the Sunday," Verstappen told Sky Sports F1 . "It was a very hectic one with the rain and stuff, but I think we executed it well and I extended my points lead, which I didn't expect last night, so I think that's a positive."

Verstappen celebrates with Perez

Verstappen was visibly happy for Perez as the Mexican secured his debut win of the season, and his first at Monaco. Perez's victory has now moved him to within 15 points of Verstappen in the F1 standings, and the Mexican is now very much in the title fight. "It was tough, especially when it's wet and you haven't really driven around with the weather and the tyres, of course. It was very slippery," Verstappen continued. "It's an amazing result for Checo [Perez]. I am so happy for him."
