Max Verstappen has conceded his qualifying was "all over the shop" after missing out on a sixth-successive pole position at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Red Bull was beaten in qualifying for only the second time this season as Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton secured his 104th F1 pole at the Hungaroring. Championship leader Verstappen had been unhappy with his balance throughout practice and despite struggles continuing into qualifying, the Dutchman finished only 0.003secs off Hamilton's pole time. Assessing his qualifying run, Verstappen explained: "I have been struggling the whole weekend to find a good balance. "Every session has been up and down. In qualifying, it was really difficult in Q1 and Q2 to feel confident and attack corners. "I thought my first run in Q3 was quite good but then second run again, no feeling. You try to push a bit more but you lose the rear, lose the front. "We are still second, we should be ahead with the car we have normally but this weekend, we haven't been on it."
The update works
Red Bull introduced a new update package rumoured to be worth up to two-tenths of a second this weekend and Verstappen has insisted there have been no setbacks with the upgrades. But explaining limitations in Budapest, he added: "It is going to be quite hot so the rear tyres will be quite difficult. "For the race, everything settles down a bit more. I just would have hoped for a bit more of a fun balance for qualifying so I could really attack it. "The update works, we just didn't really put everything together set-up-wise because it has been all over the shop and not where we want it to be."
