Max Verstappen has asserted Red Bull has “room to improve” after taking his sixth grand prix win of the season in Canada.

The Dutchman took over the lead after a safety car intervention midway through the race and didn't yield the position en route to his 60th grand prix win.

The race presented a challenge to all of the teams with wet weather and on-track incidents causing disruptions.

However, Verstappen hailed the race management from Red Bull after extending his lead in the championship.

“It was a pretty crazy race,” Verstappen said. “A lot of things were happening and we really had to be on top of our calls.

“I think as a team we did really well today. We remained calm, I think we pitted at the right time.

“Of course, the safety car worked out nicely for us but even after that, we were managing the gaps quite well.

“I love it, that was a lot of fun. Those kind of races, you need them once in a while.

However, it was not Verstappen's smoothest route to victory - in the opening stages, he ran in second place behind George Russell who secured pole position on Saturday.

After capturing the lead, he was heard complaining over the team radio while mounting the kerbs - a well-known issue for the RB20 - and noted he felt he was going to be knocked out.

Towards the end of the race, Verstappen also came close to touching the wall at the final corner.

When asked to comment on his problem he was having over the kerbs, Verstappen responded: “It’s not particularly an issue, we know what it is.

“We just need to work on it. But nevertheless, we won, that's what is most important and we still have a lot of room to improve.”
