Charles Leclerc defied searing temperatures to edge second practice ahead of Sunday's Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
Yet it was Red Bull's Max Verstappen who finished with the quickest lap of the day at the Sepang International Circuit.
The seven-time F1 champion's leading lap in FP1 of one minute 37.520s was just eight thousandths of a second faster than the best from Leclerc in FP2, with both drivers on the soft compound tyres.

Hamilton under investigation
Shortly before the hour-long session began, the track temperature was just over a staggering 61 degrees Celsius, which dropped slightly as black clouds gathered and heavy rain threatened in the background.
It meant the drivers were forced to tour the circuit slowly during their tyre warm-ups to avoid overheating on the push lap.
The possibility of rain also forced the teams to hasten their run plans. After an initial stint on the mediums, many opted to switch to the softs sooner than anticipated.
After 20 minutes, however, the top four drivers were all on mediums, with Verstappen leading the way with a lap of 1:37.785s, a tenth of a second clear of McLaren's Oscar Piastri, followed by George Russell in his heavily upgraded Mercedes and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.
There was then a burst of soft-tyre action as Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton closed to half a tenth of a second on Verstappen before Leclerc deposed the Dutch driver from top spot by a quarter of a second.
Soon after, Hamilton was placed under investigation for impeding Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto, citing an apparent issue with the wing mirror on the right-hand side of his SF-26.
With McLaren looking strong, Lando Norris then split Leclerc and Verstappen, posting a time 0.137s behind the Monégasque.
As the expected rain blew away, Red Bull's Isack Hadjar finally switched to the red-striped tyres midway through, leading to him finishing 0.099s behind Leclerc after purpling the middle sector.
Verstappen, though, continued to tour on the mediums, not once turning to the softs throughout the session, leaving him fourth quickest in FP2 behind Leclerc, Hadjar and Norris, but unusually the fastest on the day.
Hamilton finished fifth-best in FP2, followed by Piastri, and then the Mercedes duo of Russell and championship leader Kimi Antonelli, both around half a second down, although their leading times were set on the mediums.
Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson, on softs, and Alpine's Pierre Gasly, on mediums, completed the top 10, with the latter a second down.
Gasly's team-mate, Franco Colapinto, finished bottom of the timesheet, almost six seconds adrift.
The session ended with the first on-track issue as Bortoleto ground to a halt with two minutes remaining, citing a gearbox issue and sparking a VSC.
