Verstappen backs Alonso victory charge

The Dutchman has singled out Alonso as the non-Red Bull driver he would love to see win a race.

Max Verstappen has thrown his support behind Fernando Alonso to break his run without an F1 victory if he is unable to secure a race win himself. The Dutchman has raced into a 53-point advantage at the top of the Drivers' championship with five wins in the opening seven races, with Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez securing the other two victories. The Milton Keynes-based outfit has been tipped to become the first team in F1 history to win every race in a season, such has been its dominance, but asked who he would like to win if circumstances determined he wouldn't, Verstappen told media, including RacingNews365.com : "Fernando. "I like him, he is a real racer and I think he deserves it. He never gave up. "You can see he loves the sport. After so many years of having a car that was only capable of driving in the midfield, sometimes you lose that love. "But he is a real racer, an animal. So if you ask me for one driver who I would like to see win a race this year, it would be Fernando."

Verstappen on Alonso's Monaco chance

Alonso came the closest of anyone to breaking Red Bull's streak at the Monaco Grand Prix, where a 50-50 call between slicks and Intermediate tyres in-between weather conditions landed in Verstappen's lap. "Honestly, I agree with how he worded it after the race, it is super tough in those conditions," said two-time Champion Verstappen. "To go [pit] too early normally is very dangerous, it is better to go one lap later. Before I pitted, I was like 'if it stops raining now, I would not want to switch'. "It is super tough, sometimes, to make the perfect call."
