F1 Grand Prix United States 2023 report

The United States Grand Prix took place at the Circuit of the Americas during the weekend of October 20th to October 22nd.

Report qualifying United States Grand Prix

In Q1, both Aston Martin and Williams drivers were eliminated. Despite the significant update package from Aston Martin, they failed to reach Q2. Additionally, Nico Hulkenberg was knocked out in Q1. Both AlphaTauri and Alfa Romeo drivers didn't make it past Q2, which also applied to Kevin Magnussen. Notably, there was a minimal difference of +0.019 seconds between the tenth and twelfth positions. As a result, Sergio Perez narrowly clinched the tenth spot, advancing to Q3. In Q3, the top teams were closely matched. However, Charles Leclerc secured pole position with a time of 1:34.723.

It briefly seemed that Max Verstappen would take pole position with a time of 1:34.718, but this time was revoked by the FIA due to exceeding track limits at Turn 19, ultimately qualifying the Dutchman in sixth place.

Report Sprint Shootout United States Grand Prix

In the first Shootout, Logan Sargeant, Yuki Tsunoda, Valtteri Bottas, and both Haas drivers were eliminated. The gap between Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo, who held the 15th position, was only +0.012 seconds. Additionally, George Russell blocked Charles Leclerc from Monaco just before the final turn, for which the British driver later received a three-place grid penalty. In the second Shootout, Max Verstappen spun at Turn 9, sending him off into the grass. The Dutchman was able to continue the Shootout without damage, equipped with a fresh set of tires. Drivers Daniel Ricciardo, Fernando Alonso, Esteban Ocon, Lance Stroll, and Zhou Guanyu did not make it to the third Shootout.

In the third Shootout, Max Verstappen secured pole position with a time of 1:34.538. However, the difference between the top four was extremely small, with just a tenth separating them, making it an exciting third shootout.

Report sprintrace United States Grand Prix

Max Verstappen got off to a good start, allowing him to cut off Charles Leclerc immediately heading into turn one. As a result, the Monegasque driver had to take a very tight line in turn one, causing him to lose a lot of speed. Lewis Hamilton was able to capitalize on this and took over second place in the race. Piastri had a poor first lap, dropping from fifth to eighth place. Throughout the sprint race, there was intense competition between Mercedes, McLaren, and Ferrari. The British driver George Russell received a five-second penalty for overtaking Oscar Piastri off-track.

Max Verstappen won the sprint race with a convincing lead of approximately nine seconds over Lewis Hamilton. Charles Leclerc finished third in the sprint race.

Report Grand Prix United States Grand Prix

Lando Norris had an excellent start, allowing him to take the lead from Charles Leclerc from the second position. Additionally, Max Verstappen moved from sixth to fifth thanks to a good start. However, rookie Oscar Piastri had the best start, climbing from tenth to sixth. George Russell was the big loser in the opening lap, dropping from fifth to eighth.

In the early laps, both Verstappen and Hamilton quickly moved up through the field. Esteban Ocon retired in the seventh lap due to a heavy collision with Oscar Piastri in the opening lap; his left front wheel made contact with the Australian's sidepod. Piastri was able to continue for a while, but he also retired due to damage to his MCL-60. In the eleventh lap, Lando Norris, Lewis Hamilton, and Max Verstappen formed the top three (in the same order).

The first pitstops within the United States Grand Prix

In the seventeenth lap, Max Verstappen made a pit stop and switched to the medium compound. By stopping earlier, this 'undercut' presented an opportunity to take the lead. A few laps later, Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton also made their pit stops, but they switched to the hard compound. The Ferraris held the fourth and fifth positions, with Charles Leclerc switching to the white tire and Carlos Sainz to the yellow tire. Meanwhile, there was an intense midfield battle between Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll, Pierre Gasly, and Yuki Tsunoda for a place in the top ten.

Around lap 37, drivers Lando Norris and Max Verstappen came in for their second pit stops to change tires. Both drivers switched to the hard compound. By stopping earlier, Norris attempted to overtake Verstappen with an undercut. It was close, but the Dutchman stayed ahead. Later, Lewis Hamilton made his second pit stop, switching to the medium compound for his final stint. Many other drivers also made their second pit stops. Interestingly, Leclerc didn't make a second stop, and Ferrari opted for a one-stop strategy for the Monegasque. This decision ultimately cost Charles dearly, as the two-stop strategy proved much more effective.

The last laps of the United States Grand Prix

In the 49th lap, Lewis Hamilton took second place from Lando Norris. After several impressive overtaking moves, the Aston Martins secured the ninth and tenth positions. However, Fernando Alonso retired in the 51st lap due to a mechanical issue. Logan Sargeant had a strong race, capturing the twelfth position with an overtaking move on Nico Hulkenberg. Due to the significant gap between the tenth-placed Yuki Tsunoda and the eleventh-placed Alexander Albon, the Japanese driver was able to make a pit stop and switch to the soft compound in the final lap, allowing him to set the fastest lap in the race for an extra championship point.

In the final laps, Lewis Hamilton came very close to Max Verstappen, with the gap at the finish line being just two seconds. Lando Norris held onto third place, securing a spot on the podium alongside Hamilton and Verstappen.

Breaking news after the United States Grand Prix

The final standings seemed definitive, but after the race, both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were disqualified by the FIA for excessive skid block wear, which is not allowed. Pierre Gasly, Lance Stroll, and Yuki Tsunoda benefited significantly from this and moved up two positions, earning more valuable points. With Leclerc and Hamilton's disqualification, both Williams drivers also finished within the top ten. As a result, Logan Sargeant earned his first point in Formula 1, notably in his home race! More than thirty years ago, an American last scored points in Formula 1, namely Michael Andretti.
