Toto Wolff has joked that he thought Mercedes had “three cars” after Lewis Hamilton produced a top-three result during qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix.
Mercedes continued its strong run of form on Saturday in Shanghai with Kimi Antonelli surging to his first career pole position.
He will be joined on the front row of the starting grid by team-mate George Russell, who prevailed last time out in Australia.
However, the pair will have Lewis Hamilton for company in the top three, who equalled his best qualifying result for Ferrari since joining the team last year.
Hamilton spent a bulk of his F1 career with Mercedes, spending 12 years with the Silver Arrows and winning six titles with it.
His departure was a bombshell story in the F1 world, and it seems Wolff is still getting adjusted to seeing Hamilton at a different team.
In a video shared on social media, Wolff was seen pointing to the timing board and telling the camera that he “thought we had three cars”.
He then stated Hamilton is “still our driver” before the video concluded.
