Toto Wolff hands Mercedes 'cannot afford' reminder as Ferrari lurk

Toto Wolff has told Mercedes it "cannot afford" to drop any more points in the F1 title race as Ferrari continues to lurk within striking distance.

From the nine rounds thus far as of the British GP, Mercedes has suffered three big loss of points, affecting George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.

Russell dropped out of the lead of the Canadian GP, costing Mercedes 25 points, although Antonelli inherited the win, with the Italian then losing second place and 18 points in Barcelona after a battery failure of his own.

At Silverstone last time out, Antonelli was hunting down Charles Leclerc's leading Ferrari in the closing laps, with 10-lap fresher tyres, but a wheel shield failure destroyed his race, and after a track limits penalty, he finished out of the points. This cost Antonelli another 18 points, with the full haul of 25 likely such was his rate in closing in on the Monegasque.

As it stands heading to the Belgian GP, Mercedes is on 333 points in the constructors', 78 clear of Ferrari - which surprised itself by being so competitive at Silverstone.

Ahead of the Belgian GP, which Mercedes last won in 2024 with Lewis Hamilton's 84th and final victory for the team, Wolff has reminded Mercedes of the threat his former star driver and his new team pose.

"The last few races have underlined both where our strengths are and where we need to improve," Wolff began.

"We have a car capable of fighting at the front and scoring heavily, but we have not converted that potential into the best possible results. Reliability issues have cost us points, and in a championship this competitive, that is something we cannot afford.

"There is no value in having the pace if we don't bring home the result. Spa is one of the great challenges on the calendar.

"Our aim is to execute cleanly, deliver the reliability we need, and convert the performance of the car into the points it is capable of scoring.

"We have left too much on the table recently. We need to make sure that doesn't happen again starting this weekend.

"Like Silverstone, energy management will play an important role, but the characteristics of the circuit create different demands.

"It usually produces exciting racing and genuine overtaking opportunities, while qualifying remains a significant test. This is the final doubleheader before the summer shutdown, and we want to head into the break on a stronger note."
