Toto Wolff has predicted George Russell will bounce back and "not give up" in the F1 title fight after his Canadian GP heartbreak.
Russell was leading last time out in Canada when a Mercedes engine failure handed team-mate Kimi Antonelli an easy fourth straight win to extend his points lead over Russell to 43 points.
Russell has not beaten Antonelli in a grand prix since the season-opening Australian GP, but is now nearly two grands prix worth of points behind the Italian in the standings.
However, despite the disappointment, Mercedes chief Wolff has backed the "resilience" of Russell to shine through.
"Well, things have been going against him in the last few races, and [Canada] would have been big points to collect," Wolff told media, including RacingNews365.
"He was in the lead, but if there is one guy I would choose in this paddock in terms of resilience and determination, that would be George.
"He has had to overcome adversity previously, whether it is from karting on to junior formulas, and he is not going to give up in the fight.
"Honestly, there are 17 races to go, so many points to score, and he will digest, forget, move on, move forward and drive the best he can, and that's exactly what he's going to do."
