The Hungaroring shares more than just its claustrophobic layout with Monaco when it comes to aerodynamic demands.
Alongside the streets of the Principality, it is the only circuit on the Formula 1 calendar that truly encourages aerodynamicists to push the boundaries in pursuit of maximum downforce.
At the Hungarian Grand Prix, outright drag is far less of a limiting factor than at most venues, allowing teams to prioritise downforce almost without compromise.
As a result, engineers can introduce concepts that would be unthinkable at virtually any other circuit, where the associated loss in aerodynamic efficiency would far outweigh any performance gains.
Ferrari's SF-26 provides a clear example of this philosophy. The Scuderia has equipped its rear wing with a triple-element arrangement mounted on the mainplane, while also introducing three additional profiles along the wing's trailing edge.
The latter appears to have been inspired, at least in part, by an even more elaborate solution developed by Mercedes.
Particularly noteworthy is the central trailing-edge assembly on the rival W17, where the additional centre profile is integrated into a sophisticated system of linkages connected to the central actuator responsible for opening the flap.
These curved, arc-shaped levers do more than simply operate the mechanism: they also help condition and direct the airflow through the central section of the rear wing, directly beneath the inverted T-shaped auxiliary profile mounted above it.
Two further auxiliary profiles are positioned on either side of this central element, and it is difficult to ignore the similarities between this concept and Ferrari's latest high-downforce specification.
Ultimately, these extreme rear-wing configurations are purpose-built for circuits such as the Hungaroring and Monaco, with Zandvoort – where Formula 1 returns after the summer break – also expected to reward similar aerodynamic characteristics.
They also provide a clear reminder that even relatively small aerodynamic components can have a significant impact when deployed in the right conditions, underlining the level of detail teams continue to pursue in the search for performance.
