The evidence behind Max Verstappen being a real Mercedes Baku pole threat

Max Verstappen will head into qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix as the man to beat, after topping final practice at the Baku City Circuit with a lap of 1:43.922.

The four-time champion has yet to start from pole in 2026 but has been closing in on the mark in recent rounds. 

He qualified third in Spain last time out, just 0.042s off Lando Norris's pole time, and took sixth on the grid in Italy despite a Monza layout that has rarely favoured Red Bull. Baku, however, is a different proposition. 

Verstappen took his first pole at the circuit in 2025, ending a run of four consecutive poles there for Charles Leclerc, and the Dutchman's third-practice pace suggests the Milton Keynes-based team has found something significant for this weekend.

Red Bull has brought a five-part aerodynamic package to Azerbaijan, centred on a reworked floor body and diffuser designed to generate more downforce locally without disturbing the airflow further downstream. 

The update also includes revised sidepod bodywork, adjusted cooling louvres and reshaped mirror and halo fairings, all aimed at conditioning the air travelling toward the rear of the car more effectively. Both Verstappen and team-mate Isack Hadjar have received identical specifications of the package.

Team principal Laurent Mekies has confirmed the update is Red Bull's last major development of the season, with the squad now shifting its focus toward the 2027 car under the incoming regulations. 

Technical director Pierre Waché said the early data gathered in opening practice matched what the team's simulations had predicted, a sign that the correlation between the factory tools and the track is holding up.

Baku's mix of a 2.2-kilometre flat-out section and tight, 90-degree corners makes it a demanding test of both low-drag efficiency and mechanical grip under braking, and teams typically trim rear downforce to maximise straight-line speed there. 

That combination has suited Red Bull's cars in recent seasons, and Friday's long runs suggested the new floor and diffuser have not compromised the low-speed stability Verstappen needs through the castle section.

It remains to be seen whether the upgrade will hold its performance across a full race distance, but based on Friday's evidence, Red Bull looks capable of ending Verstappen's wait for a first pole of the 2026 campaign in Azerbaijan.
