Steiner keen to use McLaren 'proof' in Haas turnaround

A lack of race pace has been a major problem for Haas in the 2023 season.

Haas Team Principal Guenther Steiner believes the team can use McLaren's example of turning its season around as "proof" it can be done. McLaren endured a slow start to the season, with just 17 points after six races, but the introduction of an upgrade package at the Austrian Grand Prix and subsequent races has transformed its season, scoring 86 points and two podiums between Austria and Belgium. Haas has suffered from a poor season up to the summer break, with a lack of race pace limiting the ability of Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg to score points, with the team eighth in the standings on 11 points. Despite the poor form, Steiner believes the example of McLaren can be used to turn Haas's season around.

Steiner's push

"If you take the positives, obviously we are not doing what McLaren is doing and a lot of other teams are bringing upgrades and are still where they were," Steiner told media including RacingNews365. "McLaren is doing a very good job, you have to compliment them, but it shows that with hard-work and a bit of luck, it can be done. "It's not that I think you give up now, or you will never get there. If something has been done, you can try and do it. "It is possible but you shouldn't say that it is not, because there is proof that it is possible. "I think it is motivation, it not putting pressure and saying: 'you need to do this', that is too easy. "It is motivation for people to show them that somebody else did that, which means that you can do it as well. "How many times have you seen such a big step in the last 20 years and making such a big leap? "Knowing there can be light at the end of the tunnel is a good thing, there is no pressure and it is the opposite to say: 'guys, you can do this as well.'"
