It is arguably the statistic of the day following Carlos Sainz's victory at the Australian Grand Prix.

As remarkable as it may seem, George Russell has crashed every time the Spaniard has secured each of his three victories in Formula 1.

The first of those wins, all for Ferrari, came at the 2022 British Grand Prix, a race overshadowed by Zhou Guanyu's terrifying smash at the opening corner at Silverstone.

That incident was sparked by Mercedes driver Russell, who also crashed at Abbey and retired from the race.

Sainz's second victory was his triumph that ended Max Verstappen's 10-race winning streak last season in Singapore. On that day, Russell crashed on the final lap whilst battling Lando Norris for second.

At Melbourne's Albert Park on Sunday, and again on the final lap with Sainz seconds away from taking the chequered flag, Russell crashed heavily on the penultimate lap at turn 6 whilst duelling with Fernando Alonso for sixth place.

Russell suddenly closed in on the back of the Aston Martin as he approached the braking zone before losing control of his W15 and crashing into the barrier.

The collision spat him back onto the circuit, where his car finally came to rest on its side. The incident is under investigation.
