There is considerable demand to host a round of the F1 championship, with countries lining up to join — or even rejoin — the calendar.
However, the schedule is already up to 24 events per year. It is "pretty brutal", in the words of McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown, who would like to see Formula 1 adopt more rotational venues.
Currently, the existing concorde agreement between F1, its teams and the FIA permits a maximum of 25 rounds per season. That number is unlikely to increase beyond that point, with the current 24 already deemed the realistic capacity.
From 2027, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will share a spot on the calendar with Spa-Francorchamps, with the latter running in odd-numbered years.
The returns of the Turkish and Portuguese Grands Prix to the schedule ensure there will be at least 24 rounds next term, as has been the plan for the past few years.
But with the likes of South Africa, South Korea and Thailand waiting in the wings, it is becoming increasingly difficult for F1 to reach all interested markets without pushing the schedule beyond what logistics and health can handle.
Brown suggested recently that F1 should have 20 permanent circuits, with a further eight tracks on an on/off rotation, bringing the championship up to 28 venues in total.
