Mick Schumacher has admitted that he is trying to be realistic about his prospects for his debut season in F1, something that contrasts with an inbuilt desire to believe he can win the championship. The German will line up on the grid for Haas in 2021, a team that has struggled in recent times. This may be hard for Schumacher to adapt to, given that he arrives off the back of his title victory in Formula 2, and obviously he is the son of one of the most successful world champions in Formula 1 history, yet he is keeping his expectations in check. "I want to see an improvement over the season," Schumacher told F1 Insider when asked about the result he would be happy with from his rookie year. "I want to see that I worked very well with the team. Asking for expectations of results now is difficult. "I have to be realistic and not think that I can race for the World Championship already. Even though it's in my DNA to think that way. I always want to get the maximum out of it, that's the attitude I have to have." Whilst Schumacher's chances of continuing his F2 winning form seem unlikely in 2021, the 22-year-old feels he can bring other skills to his Formula 1 career that he has learned from his time in the junior categories. This includes the ability to work well with his team. "I simply enjoy working with a team," Schumacher said. "One thing is certain: a driver alone can't achieve much, but a whole team can. As far as age is concerned: I learned a lot in the junior categories, and even there I put a lot of emphasis on creating a special atmosphere with the engineers." Schumacher will line up alongside new teammate and fellow rookie Nikita Mazepin at the opening race of the season in Bahrain on 28 March.
