Russell podium hopes hit after early crash

The Mercedes driver hit the wall at Turn 9 on lap 13.

Mercedes hopes of a second double podium in a row have vanished after George Russell crashed during the Canadian Grand Prix. The British driver was stalking Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin in fourth when he hit the inside kerb at Turn 9. The Mercedes launched and broke rear traction on landing, sliding into the wall on lap 13 of 70, causing damage to the rear right wheel rim and front wing. After crawling back to the pits, Russell's car was repaired and sent back out on track, albeit joining the rear of the safety car train at the back of the field. "It's a bit bent, but ok," he told his team via radio. Teammate Lewis Hamilton faces an investigation following a potential unsafe release at the subsequent pit stops. The FIA has opened investigation into the incident that saw the seven-time World Champion rejoin the fast lane just in front of Alonso, who hit his brakes in avoidance. Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff's gesticulations, however, indicated he believed Alonso had made the most of the incident. Under safety car conditions, Max Verstappen leads Hamilton and Alonso.
