Ross Brawn will go down in history as one of Formula 1’s greatest technical directors, helping mastermind all of Michael Schumacher’s seven world titles. Known for his shrewd race strategies, the Englishman would eventually lead Brawn GP to both the drivers’ and constructors’ championship titles in 2009.

Starting out as a mechanic for the March Formula 3 team, Brawn moved to Williams where he would ascend the ladder and work as an aerodynamicist in the team’s wind tunnel. Brawn would also work for the Haas Lola team and Arrows, though due to the underpowered engines and lack of financial might compared to that of Williams and McLaren, his cars would struggle to attain any noteworthy results.

Brawn’s big break came in in 1991 when he was appointed as technical director at Benetton. He would oversee back-to-back drivers’ championship in 1994 and 1995 to go along with the constructors’ championship in the latter year before leaving for Ferrari to join Michael Schumacher at the end of 1996.

It took Brawn only three years to work his magic as he led Ferrari to the 1999 constructors’ championship, ending the team’s 16-year-old drought. He would go one better and win the double once again with Schumacher in 2000, this time ending Ferrari’s 21-year-old drought for a driver’s championship. This heralded a golden era for the team as they would go on to win five consecutive drivers’ championships and six consecutive constructors’ championships. Along with Schumacher, Jean Todt, and Rory Byrne, the four members of the Ferrari team would come to be known as the dream team.

Brawn would eventually leave Ferrari at the end of 2006, returning to the sport in 2008 with Honda as its principal. While Brawn did not have a direct impact on the 2008 car after only joining at the end of 2007, his efforts would bear fruit in 2009. Honda pulled out of Formula 1, opening the door for Brawn to buy the outfit and pull off one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of F1. With a last-minute deal for Mercedes engines secured, the Brawn team would win both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships in 2009 thanks to the efforts of world champion Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello.

Brawn would eventually sell the team to Mercedes and entice Schumacher to come out of retirement. Despite not winning any further titles, Brawn’s legacy as a team leader is unmatched.

Despite retiring from F1 in 2014, Brawn currently works as a Managing Director, Motorsports, and technical director for Formula 1 Group.
