Resurfaced Mexico City GP track adds uncertainty to strategy

Plenty of options are open to the strategists for this race.

Pirelli has identified four viable tyre strategies for the Mexico City Grand Prix, with the recent resurfacing of the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez adding a degree of uncertainty over the best route from lights to flag.

The preferred option for the 71-lap race is likely to be a one-stopper; an approach that involves starting on the medium compound, pitting between laps 35 and 41, and switching to the soft tyre.

An equivalent in Pirelli's simulations is a two-stop alternative that starts on softs, moves to the medium between laps 19 and 25, and returns to the soft tyre for a final stint running from roughly lap 45 to lap 51.

A second one-stop option exists, with drivers starting on soft tyres and switching to the hard compound somewhere between laps 24 and 30.

The final scenario modelled is another two-stopper: soft tyres for the opening 19 to 25 laps, a middle stint on hards lasting until lap 46 to 52, before closing out the race on the medium.

Pirelli has factored an average pit-stop time loss of 22 seconds into its calculations, a figure that will shape how drivers and strategists weigh track position against fresher rubber.

Notably, significant portions of the circuit were resurfaced ahead of this weekend, covering the Turn 16 to Turn 1 section and Turn 7 to Turn 16.

Pirelli head of motorsport business Dario Marrafuschi said the tyre picture remains genuinely open heading into the race.

"There are several possible strategic scenarios for the race, ranging from a one-stop strategy, with more careful tyre management, to a two-stop approach," said Marrafuschi.

The circuit's altitude, over 2,200 metres above sea level, strips significant downforce from the cars and increases sliding, which in turn raises the risk of front graining.

Williams' Paul Williams said the new surface was "the biggest unknown for the tyres", adding that "the roughness and grip of the new asphalt will determine both the graining risk and how difficult warm-up proves to be."

After three practice sessions, the teams and drivers will at least have a handle on how best to approach the race, but even then it remains to be seen which strategy will prove the best option.

Marrafuschi added: "The final choice [of strategy] will depend on a range of factors, including each car's characteristics, aerodynamic set-up levels and, above all, the traffic drivers may encounter after a pit stop.

"Many teams may choose to start on the medium and switch to the soft between laps 35 and 41, taking it through to the chequered flag. In this scenario, tyre management will remain an important factor despite the relatively low degradation levels.

"The alternative two-stop strategy would involve starting on the soft, followed by a stint on the medium and a final stint again on the soft. According to our simulations, there is no significant difference in total race time between these two options.

"However, teams opting for the two-stop strategy will need to carefully assess the impact of traffic, as the number of cars they may need to overtake after each stop could prove decisive."
