Red Bull question Mercedes form: Are they holding back?

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner believes it is tough to read the form of Mercedes so far, despite the team seemingly facing some problems with the W14 during testing.

Formula 1 pre-season testing gave a clearer picture for who will be able to challenge for wins from the first race, and who will be needing to play catch up throughout the season. But even though Red Bull showed confident pace with Max Verstappen at the wheel, Team Principal Christian Horner finds it tough to pick out who will be their main rivals in 2023. "Very difficult to say. I mean Ferrari look like they’re quick, Mercedes' form [is] difficult to read at the moment," he said in an interview with F1. "Are they holding something back? We'll see this time next week; I think all will become clear."

Horner: Aston Martin have made a big step

One of the surprise standouts from testing has been Aston Martin, with Fernando Alonso having shown impressive form in the race runs and over the course of a timed lap. Horner believes the team will be "very competitive" out of the box at the first race in Bahrain, where it is expected they could challenge in the top four spots. "Yeah, I think they’ve made a big step," he said. "It looks like their concept of car has moved them forward and they look like they're not too far away, so Fernando in particular looks very competitive."
