Red Bull has showcased what an F1 return to South Africa could look like as a three-decade-long wait continues.
F1 last raced on the continent in 1993 at the famed Kyalami circuit north of Johannesburg.
There have been numerous attempts to revive the race, all to no avail. Last year, it appeared as if a deal was on the cards, only to fall through on political grounds.
In typically innovative style, Red Bull cut through red tape to run an F1 car around the 4.529km circuit, with 13-time grand prix winner David Coulthard at the wheel of an RB7.
Red Bull ambassador Coulthard said: “Driving the RB7 at Kyalami was unforgettable. With the energy of the South African people and Kyalami’s world-class track, it’s clear the country is ready to rejoin the F1 calendar."
Coulthard was joined in the video you can watch below by South African Car Spinner and Red Bull athlete, Samkeliso 'SamSam' Thubane.
In a statement, Red Bull said that "set against the backdrop of Africa’s most iconic racetrack, the content provides a cinematic glimpse into what F1’s future on the continent could look like were it to return home to South Africa.
"Through this film, Oracle Red Bull Racing cements its commitment to bringing F1 closer to fans around the world, inspiring new momentum for South Africa’s motorsport ambitions."
