Following his abrupt exit from the McLaren junior programme, Alex Dunne has still not found a new home within the F1 paddock.
Shortly after his split from McLaren was made official, Red Bull's Helmut Marko confirmed it had held talks with Dunne, labelling the Irishman as a Red Bull-like driver.
Dunne has had impressive displays during his rookie Formula 2 campaign this year, including two wins and a further five podiums.
However, a handful of mistakes have left him with 10 penalty points on his super licence.
As a result, not everyone within Red Bull is keen to bring him onboard, RacingNews365 and Formula.hu understand.
The rumours that surrounded a potential tie-up between Dunne and Red Bull involved terms that would see Dunne remain in F2 next year, ahead of a potential F1 promotion for 2027.
While this deal is still on the horizon, there is still no agreement between the two parties.
Red Bull's interest in the young talent definitely exists, but not everyone within the Austrian team is convinced that they should actually bring Dunne in.
The team is aligned that Dunne is incredibly fast, but there are some doubts as to whether or not he has what it takes to fashion a successful career in F1.
This stems from the number of penalty points Dunne has accumulated, which puts him at risk of a race ban, as well as his sudden departure from McLaren.
It therefore remains to be seen if and when this potential partnership will come to reality.
