Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya has criticised how Red Bull has handled its second driver situation in recent times.
Liam Lawson was promoted to the Milton Keynes-based squad last year following the exit of Sergio Perez, who struggled for performance alongside Max Verstappen.
However, Lawson lasted just two races in the seat as he also could not extract pace from the car.
Both Perez and Lawson, as well as team newcomer Yuki Tsunoda, have spoken about the challenges of the Red Bull challengers, which have been notoriously tricky to drive.
Speaking to Plejmo about the driver status at Red Bull, Montoya said: “Yuki Tsunoda is doing good.
“I think Red Bull realised they were fucking it up massively from that side of the garage.
“They were running Max stuff on both cars and just saying to the number two, ‘You're an idiot, you can't drive.’”
Tsunoda has enjoyed a better time behind the wheel compared to Lawson, but it has not come without struggles of his own.
The 24-year-old couldn't break into the top 10 during qualifying or the race on his debut in Japan, but scored a solitary point in Bahrain last weekend.
Montoya has labelled Tsunoda as the right choice for the team as it can lean on his experience going forward.
“Tsunoda was a better choice than Liam Lawson because he has been in F1 long enough now and he's got enough knowledge to drive the car and go, this needs changing.”
