RB16 RB16 - Latest F1 news about the Red Bull RB16 driven by Max Verstappen

On the back of three consecutive third place finishes in the Constructors’ standings, Red Bull designed the RB16 for the 2020 campaign in an attempt to leapfrog rivals Mercedes and Ferrari in the standings.

Given technical regulations for the season were largely unchanged, the RB16 built upon and refined the philosophies and designs deployed on the 2019 car, the RB15. The most significant changes were to the nose of the car, with the RB16 featuring a narrower design, double vent and larger apertures to better harvest and direct airflow to the car’s internal areas. Inlets on the sidepods were narrowed and reduced in height, small fins were added to the Halo, parts of the rear suspension were raised and the front multi-link suspension was redesigned to improve the car’s performance in low-speed corners.

Initially slated to debut at the 2020 Australian Grand Prix the race was delayed and then cancelled, along with the following three events in Bahrain, Vietnam and China due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result the car made its debut in Austria after Max Verstappen and Alexander Albon qualified second and fourth respectively, however electrical failures on both cars meant neither car finished the race.

Things improved from there for Verstappen as he put together a run of five consecutive podium finishes, including a victory at the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix at Silverstone. The same can’t be said for Albon, as the British-Thai driver struggled for performance. His first podium wouldn’t come until the eighth race of the season, the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, that saw Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas secure a one-two finish for Mercedes.

Unable to stop the Silver Arrows from yet another Constructors’ Championship, Red Bull did finish the season on a high when Verstappen dominated in Abu Dhabi to give the team its first victory at the circuit since 2013. Although the team improved and finished second in the constructors’ standings, it wasn’t enough for Alexander Albon to keep his seat as Sergio Perez will take his place for 2021.

The RB16 will see its life extended to 2021 after major technical changes were pushed back to 2022. Teams will run 2020-specification cars, with Red Bull’s chassis named the RB16B.
